I have a three year old who is a world class destroyer of anything digital - LeapPad's, DVD's, CD's, Smartphone's, anything you can think of... We've bought more destroyed XBox hire games than new one's. When the '08 iMac hard drive started to fail after daily faithful and unceasing service, I figured I'd use the Firewire 800 port with a 1TB drive rather than get a nice, shiny and too attractive replacement. I wasn't looking for tough so much as bombproof. The LaCie Rugged Triple arrived within a week of ordering it from Canada, which by regional North Queensland standards is spectacular. Arriving in the lead up to Christmas, the unopened package on my desk was too inviting for the seven year old, who had to open it whilst I was outside. I got inside to find him and 45kg of Great Dane pup having a hockey match with a rectangular orange and silver puck (which didn't slide very well) up and down the hallway. More force with the cricket bat fixed the friction problem, and the dog was allowed to pick it up so that side was sorted too! I was astonished there wasn't a mark on it after that, but I still wasn't expecting anything like function or even the possibility of a warranty claim after the introduction to the household. Drop proof, maybe. Cricket bat proof. Maybe not. I plugged it in, and amazingly something happened. It wasn't a great big sign saying you've screwed it up either. The drive automatically uploaded all info to adjust partitioning without me doing anything. I didn't do a GUID partition format with Disk Utility to see if I could keep access to the Cloud Back up service included. I didn't know whether Mountain Lion would enable me to use it as the startup drive though, and only when I booted up with the Option key held down would it let me see the LaCie as a Startup drive option, but it worked impeccably and I've been using it as the computer hard drive for a month now and the Mac's as quick as I ever remember it being - considerably more so than I expected from a 5400rpm drive. The LaCie Rugged Triple has proven itself bomb-proof, pain-free, exceptionally quiet and superb value for money. The seller (air4tech) dispatched almost immediately. My Carbon Copy Cloner backup drive will be two years old in the middle of this year and I will definitely be replacing it with a LaCie Rugged. The closest thing I can think of to perfect for a fast, tough external drive.Read full review
This product is great. Needed an external hard drive that I could use on the go when shooting photography. New these bad boys are very expensive. I did buy used and the cost was less. I don't know if that was a good idea. We will see how long it lasts. Really, LaCie has nailed it with doing a all in one hard drive, case and case protecting. Simple but great. I would like to look inside of it. You know clean out dust and what not.
I used to have a Western Digital Hard Drive, so far this Lacie drive is much more durable. Backup is speedy when using firewire. It's a light weight and portable 1GB drive. The orange cover provides a good grip and makes it easy to find in my bag and on my desk.
this 1tb hard drive runs pretty fast. I would definitely recommend it to anybody who uses heavy files. plus the rubber cover makes it seem that its capable of receiving a drop from above 2 meters.. great product!
This drive has done what I asked of it so far but it is bulkier than I wanted and was not near as fast a an older W D Passport that I had. I bought this lacie to back the Passport up. it's early, only had it a couple of weeks but I have to say that I'm less than impressed with it at this point. I really think I should have got a passport ultra and would have had I know how bulky this drive was.
