First of all, this is a $5.00 plane with the potential to be a pretty good small block plane. The one I received did not have the brass insert at the mouth (as pictured), shipper was willing to take it back but I'd already started the tuning process and decided to keep it. To make this a good plane you'll first have to true the sole, normal for wood planes, you have to true the inside where the blade and wedge are located. You may have to reshape the wedge to get it uniform. Then you will have to hone the iron(blade) and true it up as well. Probably a lot more effort than the plane is worth, but the end result is a pretty good plane that has a respectable hardened steel blade edge. Would I buy it again? Maybe. I have other block planes that work well and this one can be pulled as a Japanese plane is or pushed as a Western design. For the satisfaction of tuning it to a good plane, your call. It will work as it came, but not to most wood guys satisfaction.Read full review

I bought one of these on a lark just to see what kind of plane you can get for the price of a cup of coffee. I decided I would make a video of the experience entitled "Tuning a $3.59 Japanese Plane: a Journey of Discovery." If you search for it on Youtube with that title you will find it. I recommend watching it before you buy one of these but I'll summarize the findings as follows: If you are someone who doesn't have a lot of tools and experience and thinks it would be great to have a plane around the house for small jobs, this is not the plane for you. It really doesn't work in the condition you will receive it and it will be of no use to you. Well, almost no use. I think if you needed to break the sharp edge on a board you could get this plane to do that. Any other thing you can imagine, like planing a door or smoothing something, forget it. The iron is not sharp and the fit and finish of the wood block is in need of tuning before you can do any serious work. If you are someone who has experience with planes and you have a good supply of stones for honing plane irons and tools for flattening the bottom and bed of the plane you can make this work very nicely. The end of the iron is hardened so it's not a bad piece of metal. In my video I show this plane being used to bring a rough board to a glass-like finish. If you like that sort of challenge, this is a fun little project for a rainy day. But if you already have the tools to make this plane work you probably already have planes that are better than this one will ever be. So really you'd have to do it for the experience of making it work or if you had some sort of special situation like teaching a boy scout troop to plane wood and you needed 12 of them. Or you want a little plane in your pocket for minor cleanup or edge breaking. One last thing, planes like this are meant to be pulled so there's no real way of holding it to push it like you're used to on a block plane. It's uncomfortable like that and you'll have to get used to pulling it, in which case it is not as uncomfortable to use. It is not nearly as nice as a small Stanley block plane that fits nicely in the palm of your hand, though. But you can't get one of those for $3.59. I hope this review was helpful. And if you do a video of your experience with this plane please post a link in the comments of my video.Read full review

This is not a high-end tool but with a little tune-up can be a useful addition to the tool-users choices. It has a coarsely ground bevel that will need to be honed. The size and shape of the body is ergonomic for a medium sized hand. If cared for, the tool should last a respectable duration. It is probably best used as a trimming pane or a block plane. For the price (about $3.50, including shipping (!) it can't be beat if you enjoy and appreciate traditional tools.
