I was impressed with the almost 4,000 bottles listed in this book. I was disappointed, though in the limited number of pictures the writer used. Several were tough to see and the descriptions were rather limited. The book is small enough in size to be taken along when shopping for old bottles and I find this to be very helpful.
Being a bottle digging, and collector since the late 1960's, I began my collecting era with some of the simple bottle books, which gave a general guide of prices of the common as well as some of the less known old bottles. I own this guide and their updated one (most recent is the 2003 edition) and find it a good general guide for the collector-mainly the newer enthusiast. The prices are fairly adequate, but as with any other hobby, they fluctuate with time, collector's preference and availability. This guide has some black and white pictures of the bottles and their prices. Some are accurate and some are not. I would rate this overall, as a "good-fair" guide.
As a bottle dealer of thirty years, I simply have to have any book on bottles. This one was a valiant effort, but poor pictures and wildly inaccurate pricing make it a minor reference guide at best, a novelty is closer to the truth. The market is so fickle that price guides like this, though born out of a love for bottles that I can't help but respect, are pretty much useless. The information in this one, despite several revisions is still dated and errors abound.
