This is a fantastic book. I like Mike Rowe very much and his message is one that needs to be paid attention to. He has a terrific intellect tied in with a great sense of humor. There is just so much nonsense going on with people that do not want to face reality...just hoping that if they can pretend hard enough, their little dream of a perfect world where everything is "fair" and no one has to work hard to be successful and the government will provide everything, will actually happen. Mike is honest. Unfortunately, that means that a great deal of people will do the five year old mentality thing and proverbially put their hands over their ears and yell, "lalala lalalala I can't hear you, lalala". I am not cynical, but it is only obvious that we live in a world of morons. People go to great lengths to get their bodies in shape, but exercising the brain seems to much trouble for many. I digressed a lot and kind of went into my own editorial about the general populace. I suppose I am trying to support the refreshing distinction of reading Mike Rowe's book. He does not write in a manner that comes across as an "intellectual", but as a man not that has a great deal of common sense and a sincere interest is getting a dysfunctional situation functional again.Read full review
Mike Rowe - host of "Dirty Jobs" - wrote a book??? How could I *not* buy a copy! With his inimitable humor, Mike Rowe makes a deadly serious point about the status of our society's attitude towards work. More than that however, he offers up hard nosed, old fashioned but creative solutions to our country's unemployment. Rowe's stance is studiedly and adamantly apolitical. He's not criticizing or complimenting Left or Right or In Between wings. He's strictly human, brilliantly practical and absolutely on the right track. This book is loaded with inspiration one can use for one's self, or for encouraging and guiding others. The goals of Rowe's Foundation is well worth supporting even beyond the contribution represented by the purchase of this publication. Mike, keep up the good work!!Read full review
I've liked Mike Rowe since I started watching Dirty Jobs so many years ago. He is probably the best voice-over person in the business. And, he's dedicated himself to getting the word out that there are great jobs in the United States, and a college degree may not be necessary! His MikeRoweWorks Foundation really does some great things. I bought this book both for the donation to MRW and to get some more information about Mike. If you read nothing else, the forward by his mother is priceless! The book contains exactly 1 paragraph of new material written by Mike. And he's totally up front about it! But, that one paragraph says a lot. The rest of the book is articles he's written for magazines and papers and other items like that. Very good stuff. I hope Mike continues his push for more people in the trades and we get the United States back to the manufacturing giant we once were.Read full review
Mike Rowe's book contains a series of articles building on the concept of honest work at good to high pay. While the TV show "Dirty Jobs" was sensational, his book fills in more details in both an informative and entertaining way. He is hitting a point that many of these jobs are unfilled because of prejudice compared to those who get a college education without employment based on it. I bought this book to donate to his MikeRoweWorks Foundation and encourage other to recognize the truths in this book.
