About thirty years ago, the former Conductor of the Bolshoi Orchestra Andrey Simonovich Filipov is working the position of the Janitor of the Orchestra. Filipov was severely punished for helping Jewish musicians. One night, while cleaning the Bosses office, a fax is transmitted, Filipov discovers the fax, reads it, and learns that the Chatelet Theater in Paris desires the Concerts' services for two weeks. Filipov gambles with everything at his disposal and also gambles with lives, as the quest to perform The Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky has consumed him, as well as the other musicians he selects. Outstanding.
Melanie Laurent, for me, is THE young French actor of her age group (she's 34 now but can play any age from teens to ~40). One of those actors who when on screen is the one you look at because she is so dynamic, and honest , avoids cliches and therefore is unpredictable in her performance... just like real people are. Plus her beauty is beguiling, esp her eyes. The whole cast esp the Russians, surprised me with their charm and comedic skills. The music and sound are glorious, and both won Cesar awards (French Oscars); and the violin work by Melanie and the conducting by Aleksey Guskov were completely convincing and engaging. The editing is superb, about as good as it can get. This is a must see for folks who want a respite from the soggy sad news of the day. I've notified my family all over the world to get this DVD and take time to view it without interruptions. My favorite farce since Some Like It Hot.Read full review

It is a great movie. So happy to have. It is a heart warming story as well as being funny. The manner in which a world class symphony is put together seemed an impossible task but with the cleverness and tenacity of one conductor it happened. I bought this DVD after renting it from a local DVD rental store. Wanted the rest of the family to be able to see it too and any other friends visiting. That is why I added it to my collection of DVDs I want to have handy to share.
