Written in the 11th century, this portrait of courtly life in medieval Japan is considered as the world’s first novel. This is the story of Prince Genji son of an emperor by one of his secondary spouses. It is well written and translated. I am interested in Medieval Japan Culture and this is the reason I wanted to read this book. I was disappointed as it really tells us about the life of the aristocracy, without much reference to the life of common people, merchants, artisans and warriors. In the same way that you cannot understand French Culture by visiting Versailles where king Louis XIV was lavishly living, I do not think you can understand Japanese Culture through this book.
very good
