This book has more layers than your average ogre..er onion. It is a story about the haves and the have-nots veiled as a superhero comic book. The characters are original (that is the main characters) the secondary characters and antagonists are excellent and again VERY thinnly veiled parodies of major title DC and Marvel characters. The author and artists show a strange combination of respect and contempt for contemporary comic books and the industry as a whole. Superheroes are real in the book but thier antics are buffed and shined for public consumption by a comic book company to promote and market an umbrella corperation's products. What I like the art is good, better than many mainstream books by the big two. The story arc is also great, Wee Hughie is the eternal victim who finally gets to be something more and to make a difference. His conspiracy theoriest hobby gets a dose of reality when he becomes part of the shadow world and finds it is not all it is cracked up to be. The antagonists, parodies of immortal figures like Captain America, Superman, Wonder Woman and the like are not much more than corperate puppets who, not only market thier various titles, but often act as enforcers of thier corperate masters policy. Rumors I had heard before reading this title were of over the top sex, violence and artistic self-loathing by the creators. The sex part is no more than you might find in your average R-rated movie and is not gratuitious in nature, but exists to enhance the plot line. The violence is also no more extreme than some PG-13 movies I have watched. In fact Wee Hughie is visibly repulsed by the violence, liking the spying and less hands on part of his new job. Of the five characters, Wee Hugie does what he HAS to do, Mother's Milk does what he MUST do, Billy does what he is driven to, and Frenchie & Female are just lunatics. They are well thought out, detailed creations with lives that are all to easy to imagine as real. Wee Hugie's initial plight is all to familiar to anyone who has been wronged by a government or corperation and then has to face the throngs of lawyers and legal mumbo jumbo. Billy Butcher is part of the get even dream so many have when faced with a bully, he has the power, skill and resources to make even the most powerful forces on earth loose sleep. I like how each of the characters speaks like they would sound, not just easy to read text. The London English accent, the Glasgow Scotland accent and fake French accent, even MM's New York in a Barry White Bass accent is well emulated in the writing style. I am not gushing here, there are some problems with the plotline and some characters are just so absolutely dispicable that at some points you want to put the book down, except the next page you might see that individual get thier just desserts. There are some panels drawn better than others, like the artist HAD to get finished in a hurry on this one and took forever to get that one just right. There are also some aspects that are not so original the Seven appears to me to be very close the the DC Crime Syndicate with Ultraman and that group of otherworld Villians, but no where near as depraved. I look forward to reading the entire series. Definitely not for kids but its about time someone looked at superbeings seriously in this perspective. There are the Haves and the Have-nots, not money but super powers, and the Have-Nots have to keep the Haves in check because they are scared.Read full review
An adult slant on comic book super heroes that's over the top, shocking and completely enjoyable!Definitely not for the faint of heart or easily offended. A good bargain and introduction to consider to help you decide picking up more of the story in trade paperback form or monthly from your comic book supplier! I'm definitely on board for the duration of this title !
Pointed out several obvious flaws in the "superhero" stories, and did not sugar coat a single part. =]
