This review is for my new Cobra XRS 9970G Voice Alert 15 Band Radar and Laser Detector. I purchased this radar detector my Subaru WRX. I'm tech savvy so I'm writing this review as such. I've owned several radar detectors over the years, including some other Cobras, and this one is quite sophisticated and highly sensitive - and believe it or not - it's easy to set up and operate. According to some reviews I read before purchasing it, it was rated #2 and/or #3 on the sensitivity scale, with the #1 and #2 radars costing about 2X to 3X as much as my Cobra -- (on the features scale it was usually rated #1) SO I'm OK with #2 on the sensitivity and saving a couple hundred dollars or more... Although it's recommended to mount it on the center of dash/windshield I decided to mount it on the left side of the windshield, about 3 to 4 inches high from the dash, where I can reach the control panel easily with my left hand if need be. I've driven by several traps and red cameras and "THANK GOODNESS" it warned me with plenty of time to adjust the speed. This Cobra radar detector performs great. It has many features to reduce false alerts including Cobra's famous intellimute and a new feature which senses your RPMs and mutes the sound below a preset RPM value you entered in the setup menu. The screen, about 1.25"x1.25" is visible and readable with no problem. It can be set to constant on or to blackout after a preset time you also select during setup, which goes back on as soon as an alert pops on the screen (it's kind of a screen saver that goes off and back on upon activity). The radar is loaded with the AURA Database for red cameras and similar alerts - you must update it manually with your computer. The database seems to be updated everyday but I would recommend that you update it once a week or so depending on your driving routes and habits. And best of all it's free to update with the purchase of the Cobra XRS 9970G . A nice feature of the GPS system is that you can manually set different alert locations, up to 1000 of them. Remember that some states do not allow items (radars, GPS, notepads, etc) to be adhered to the windshield, verify what your state's regulations are. And in a few states (ie. VA, NY)it's illegal to use radar detectors or even have them in your vehicle. So check first... ROOM for IMPROVEMENTS: One of the complaints I read most often on all radars and I complaint about myself is VOLUME LOUDNESS. Yes, it's loud enough when you have your windows closed and the stereo soft or off. BUT if you enjoy driving with your windows down when the weather is nice, or if you happen to be cruising listening to some great music a little loud, YOU WILL MISS THE BEEP (or voice alert depending on your preferences)... Yes, it would be nice if the radar had an option to be twice as loud (YES TWICE) so you can hear it over the music or road/wind noise. This Cobra has a feature that allows you to connect external speakers through a jack but I have not yet tried it as I don’t want another cable hanging from my radar. Since I like experimenting, I’m exploring some sort of wireless speaker connection onto my stereo or something like that. We'll see. I hope you find my review helpful. Enjoy !Read full review
I had debated buying a Radar Detector for at least 6 months, always wondering if it would be worth the expense. I do alot of driving in an over-congested City with an excess of arrogant drivers, not to mention hoards of red light cameras and speed guns being pointed by hiding police officers. I heard about the COBRA XRS 9970G Radar Detector and finally decided to purchase one. WHAT A GREAT RADAR DETECTOR! It does it all, from detecting those cameras to speed trap areas, and more! I then bought a second unit for my wife, who's also very pleased with it. IT'S THE BEST!!
Great unit, great features, and great price, especially considering you get free updates for the red light cameras and speed traps. I have a lot of red light cameras where I live and they are all in the database. I was even made aware of a couple I didn't know about. This will be a great feature for road trips. My Escort Solo was my detector of choice but now I'll be taking the XRS9970G wherever I go.
This is my second unit. I drive about 3000 miles a week and feel like I cant drive without it. I hate having to grab mines to drive my wifes car and she hates that she doesnt have one. I have picked up a state trooper as far as 3 miles away on an open road with no traffic here in Florida, and of course there arent any hills here in South Fl. Would have giving it 5 stars but figured it would be nice to know what direction the signal was coming from other than that I love it, love it, love it. . .
works great top of the line great distance at detections low amount of false alarms love the gps tracking of cameras and hot spots. overall one of the best ones I have ever owned , navagation menues are easy to use...
