"Radio" just was another instance of unbelievable great acting by Cuba Gooding, Jr. I had just seen the same actor in "Gifted Hands," and his role in that movie placed him far and above the regular actors in a movie. He was a gifted surgeon, who separated siamese twins joined at the head. But in "Radio," Gooding portrays a moron--a young adult with an IQ in the range of maybe 70. Gooding did an excellent job in this role, just as he did in "Gifted Hands". He was a man no one understoood, and is befriended for some unknown reason by the local town high school coach. The high respect the coach had in the town seems to take a plummeting dive when he starts to place lots of attention on "Radio". He turns Radio into an interesting character in the story, making him the team mascot, and in so doing draws the personality of this moron into a man of courage who shares what he has with the entire team. Radio inspires the whole team, which leads them to a championship, and in the end, they adopt him as one of their own. It's a fluffy story in some ways, but Radio is a real life story made into a movie, and there is a redeeming factor from which we can all gain from watching. It's a clean movie--something you may want to show to your kids. PG rated.Read full review
Great movie! Saw it years ago & just as good as I remembered. Addresses bullying, kindness, humanity & just being decent to your fellow human beings! A good learning tool for older kids & adults alike. Doesn't hurt that it's based on a true story:)

This movie will make you cry so get a box of tissues ready. It will make you laugh, cry and wonder. Wonder why there are not more teachers or coaches in our children's lives today that really care, understand and will take the extra steps to make life for others seem as if there is no limit to what can be accomplished. Although I have seen this movie many times, I bought this movie for my 10 year old son. He saw it for the first time at the age of 8 and it really touched his heart. As much as I hate to see my son cry I was almost thrilled to see the tears roll off of his tiny face. Even at the age of 8 he understood what challenge's can be met even when others may not have hope. I was on e-bay when my son asked me to look for it because he wanted to not only have it but to take it to his teacher so she could also watch it. She did and e-mailed me to say that I have a very caring and sensitive son. She loved it and has since told many others about it. It only takes 1 to really care and many to understand. Great movie.Read full review
I love that it is based on a true story, just happened to be about 20 miles from where I now live, and I never knew about it. It shows the struggles that exist within our culture toward anyone who is different, whether by race or mental abilities. It's interesting how sports has been involved in overcoming such prejudices through the years, even as we hear on TV how a civil war stopped in Africa because for the first time a country's team made it into the World Cup soccer tournament. Precious and few are those who are willing to take a stand for what is right to help someone else, even if it costs them personally. Of course, in the long run, it pays off. I love the extra stuff that shows the real people the movie is based on, and how the different actors approached their characters. The grating realities of life are frequently lightened by humorous bursts. The acting is excellent, including the sports scenes (which surprised me) and I was totally amazed by some of realism of certain scenes, such as when the coach comes home, and his daughter tells him Radio's mother had died. This is a great family movie, and like my favorite movies usually do, gives you some things to think about, and to apply in your own life.Read full review
