I first read this book when I had a total hip replacement at St. Mary's in Rochester, and cared deeply about the book characters. I've been looking for a copy of it ever since, and finally found it on Ebay. You quickly become involved with the characters, the older doctor with the ether habit who lovingly cares for his orphans, most of whom are products of unwed mothers. He also performs abortions on women, with compassion and caring. The young man, who is his apprentice but leaves to work at a Cider House (making cider from apples) and falls in love with a girl, but eventually return alone to the orphanage and fills the shoes of the failing older doctor. Read it - you will love it! And it may even change a few of your views.
The Cider House Rules, a story that shows a dark side of Maines and just about all States dark history on abortions is not the real part of this story. No matter how you feel about abortions you can read this wonderful story and not have your beliefs shattered. The real them of this story is love, love for those who were left loveless and without a real family but found a real family and all the love one could ever find. I won't go into much on this because I don't want to give away the story, but I will say this is a must read! One of the best books in my expansive library! Find it, buy it, READ IT! Then pass it on.
I purchased this book not to read its contents but to use its contents for bookfolding; and for that purpose, it was perfect!

I was hoping to get this first edition signed by John Irving after "An Evening with Harry, Carrie and Garp" at Radio City Music Hall. That didn't happen, but the book is fabulous. John Irving is one of our generations BEST authors. Take the time to read his novels. You won't regret it!!!
