If you are looking for a reliable black and white printer with low operating cost you can't go wrong with an HP 4000, 4050, or, 4100. They may not be the fastest, or most up to date, but they are cheap to operate and have toner and fuser cartridges that just slide in. You get about 5000 sheets of black and white prints on a toner cartridge (and that cartridge includes the drum). Ink jets typically get 500 copies per cartridge so you will pay much more. The fusers last about 200,000 copies is you use the HP parts. Feed tires are easy to change, can be done by anyone, same for the fuser units. One important note is that the driver you use can make a big difference. For me the PCL6 did not work nearly as well as the PCL5. I think they come standard with 4Meg memory, I am told that is about 50 pages, 34 Meg chips are cheap and east to install and that is about all anyone needs, I bought more for my first 4000 and wasted my money. When HP got to the 4200, 4250 series something went wrong, you might only get 100,000 copies out of the fuser, have noise problems, and are just not as good as the older machines. Configuration seems to be harder too. It's just my opinion and experience so you decide. I bought my last HP4000 from michael8431 on Ebay. He is fantastic, I suggest you check his auctions. Best I have ever dealt with, quick response, great low mileage machines A++++. Happy PrintingRead full review
It's a freaking miracle. Bought a used duplexer, a used HP JetDirect J3111A for Older Mac compatibility as well as ThinNet Ethernet and a second twisted pair port (had an 8000 N that I spilled Coke in and couldn't afford to repair) and with the spare 8MB module from the 8000 N had everything you could ask for except a third paper tray, which like the printer itself minus toner (the brand X toner it came with failed promptly), duplexer, and the J3111A card was an eBay purchase and if it works as well as the duplexer and printer I will be set. These 4000s of the first generation chassis blow me away. They're something that, like a similarly eBay purchased Quicksilver Power Mac G4 that I use for Mac OS 9 work, it's worth everything you put into it. I bought the Quicksilver and printer for each other, so they've always worked better with each other-and that seeming attachment has only grown stronger with time. $500 plus non-eBay accessories and I am not regretting any of that cost. Of course I'd recommend it! Guess what printer was used in Sad Macs, Bombs, and Other Disasters 4th Edition? It's this puppy. So even Mac nuts chose this printer. You have to get it. And that is it.Read full review
The laser printer was delivered exactly as described. After years of replacing ink color ink cartridges and slow print speeds, it was time to go laser. The monthly duty cycle of this printer exceeds my annual usage, so I know it will last me forever. The cost was great as I probably spend as much in ink refills. One of the best purchases I've made, period! I purchase a parallel-USB adapter which makes it very easy to use on any computer in the house.
The Hewlett Packard Laser 4000 in all versions is the BEST single monochrome printer we have ever had. Our office has four of them and have found all of them to be Reliable, inexpensive to maintain and versitile. Because this is a little older printer, toner is reasonably priced but still readily available. And the optional add on drawers make each printer versitile in the extreme. You can set up a different size paper in each drawer and not have to worry about using the manual ride feature (but it works well too if you want it!)
I have always bought Hp printers and officejet all in ones and have not ever had any problems with them,i just purchased a laser printer made by hp and have already seen the Quality and speed it has . the print speed is excellant and the clear and straight letters and grafics are amazing. I would highly recomend this work Horse to anyone, the toner is not expensive and the monthly print is 65,000 pages, think about that for a second ? 65,000 pages duty cycle monthly thats a lot, toner averages 8,000 to 10,000 pages per toner cartridge, inkjet printers cost about 32.00 for black ink per 115 pages maximum, cost savings is no comparison.
