Dragon Age 2 is not Dragon Age. It seems like an obvious truism, but given the backlash Bioware's sequel has suffered.in doing something so dramatically different, Bioware has inadvertently given other developers and publishers all the reason in the world to keep their top franchises safe and stale.Where the original game had locations all over an entire nation to explore and slaughter, Dragon Age 2 focuses in on a single city. There's nothing wrong with this — indeed, urban fantasy is a genre long underdeveloped in video games, and Bioware was brave to take a crack at it with a very valuable IP. In the main, it works — the city of Kirkwall is vibrant with plenty of intrigue. There are enough plot twists and turns to keep driving you through the story, and the side stories are an interesting bunch. Combat is vastly improved, with a far more dynamic and customisable system than previously. This time around there's a greater range of skills and abilities that are genuinely useful. To be fair there are signs that the team at Bioware laboured over a tight production time line — there's a few too many assets that are reused a few too many times for an RPG's own good — and about halfway through you're going to realise the reason the game is set inside a city is because featuring too many other locations would have blown out the development time. But that's not much to complain about. Dragon Age 2 remains a mature, challenging, modern RPG. It's unfortunate that should there be a Dragon Age 3 Bioware will now be discouraged from trying to do something different.Read full review
Honesty is the best policy, and honestly the only reason I ever bought this game was to romance Anders. That being said, the story isn't an epic - but it is still enjoyable. The combat system isn't the worst I've ever played but it is far from the best as well. The scene settings are dull and repetitive and the game itself is glitchy as all get out. There will be several missions made completely unplayable by glitches, but for me it didn't impede the main story line so it wasn't a huge issue. What really makes this game worth playing is your party members and the dlc. The characters, most particularly your party members, are interesting and have really fantastic interactions both among themselves and with the PC. The dlc made for this game is easily some of the best dlc Bioware has made, in my opinion. All in all, this game is worth playing if you don't rage too hard about glitches but don't buy it new.Read full review
Almost Perfect RPG. Improved gameplay from Dragon Age 1. Story gets old and you cant skip over some of the story so thats bad. Loading time.. the Loading time is awful in this game.. all done on a Map screen.. Expect to spend many hours Waiting for the game to LOAD. If they could fix this Loading time issue it would be a great game. I do recommend this.. but you will get angry at the Loading time.. and the boring story that you cant skip over..
A few friends of mine would simply not stop talking about this game series, so I finally decided to take the plunge and try it out for myself. I can now say I'm honestly VERY happy I did. The choice-based system of story progression and development of your character reminded me a lot of the choose your own adventure books I used to read as a kid. I really enjoyed the characters in this installment. There's a wide variety of romance-able characters and regular companion characters to work with, all with their own unique stories to tell and oodles of side quests to keep you busy. Some are more fleshed out than others, but they all seem to have a lot of care put into their writing (particularly Fenris and Varric). The story was full and engaging detailing your journey from penniless refuge to savior of the city-state, Kirkwall. There are lots of options for truly making your character and story uniquely your own and the interface is fairly intuitive and well-explained in the beginning tutorials. I will make note that this installment lends itself more to character development and dramatic storytelling than it does to exploration and your world and leveling up are fairly tight-knit and controlled in this game. Many locations are recycled and redressed most likely to save on development time, disk space and to make the game easier on the system. Personally, while I thoroughly enjoy exploration, I usually find character development more interesting so I was quite happy to focus more on my companions and the story of each quest rather than where the quests took place. The soundtrack is lovely as well. I'm sometimes a bit particular about soundtracks, but this is one I just might have to grab for my music collection. Lastly, there's lots of downloadable extra content to further expand both the world and the story (one of which acts as a partial prequel to the third game installment I'm told). There's even an extra, romance-able character to be gained from these downloads. Needless to say, I will definitely be playing this a few more times in the future. Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.Read full review
Not as good as the first or the third game, but it is good! It’s an in between type of game. It’s a set up for later games rather then it’s own standing fame. Still important and fun to play.
