The As EasyRig with Serene Arm performs admirably for a vest at this price range. It’s certainly not the same quality as the Swedish version but it’s functional enough to exist at this price. The package is surprisingly small with some assembly required. The illustrations provided helped, but they could have been more elaborate. The downside with the small packaging is the carry bag it comes with is too small to put back the vest without having to disassemble the serene unit again. I purchased a larger duffle bag to carry it like a traditionally collapsed easy rig, with the upper arm pulled out of the vest for storage. Speaking of the arm it needs to be secured with two eye bolts. It would be nice if their was a solution to this that didn’t require extra pieces to be carried around. In fear of losing these bolts I attached them with a strap to the vest so they don’t get lost. The vest is comfortable enough around the body. The buckles keep the backpack snug with the torso. The padding was a little thin (it’s just a precut white foam piece, material similar to a packing peanut) so I added extra cushioning in the vest. This was easy to do with the accessible zipper it has. The arm itself sits well above the head with the serene arm giving extra height clearance. The camera attaches easy enough to the vest if it has a top handle. It worked well enough with a ronin setup (although it’s been difficult to tell if it really benefited the ronins actual stability). Perhaps this unit was designed with more handheld operation in mind. I may try using a kong frog adapter and eyebolt with it later for cameras without a handle. The tension line works well. You have to manually set where you want the camera to rest at by loosening and tightening the tension knob. The tension knob in the backpack is difficult to adjust on your own and pretty much makes a second person essential to full adjust the vest. I wish the knob had an easier way to adjust the tension as a single user. Once the tension is set the vest does a decent enough job at keeping the camera at the set height. Their isn’t much flexibility in changing the height without loosening and tightening the tension knob so achieving fluid height changes mid-shot can be difficult. The serene arm helps in stabilizing and altering the height mid shot. The serene arm comes out of the box with the spring very tight. I have found it’s more stable during setup if I loosen the serene arm all the way (with the camera loaded) and then try to lift the camera with the spring so the serene arm sits midway between fully dropped and fully lifted. Then the spring works well reducing vertical shake. Overall it’s not a bad vest. For the money it definitely does what I expected it to do. It takes the weight from the camera off my arms and puts it towards my torso. I wish it was easier for me to move the camera up and down as I desired without having to fiddle with the tension knob each time. It took some practice getting used to it (but definitely was a little painful on my back at first until I got better at setting it up). I wish the bag was bigger to transport it with the serene arm attached. I wish the attachment of the upper bar to the vest didn’t require two bolts that could get misplaced. A very functional unit but may not be for everyone.Read full review
