Ryan Reynolds stars as an uptight family man whose careful life is suddenly thrown into upheaval in this quirky romantic comedy. Directed by Marco Siega (PRETTY PERSUASION), the film opens with Frank (Reynolds) counseling his daughter's fiancé (Mike Erwin) about the highs and lows of married life. The film quickly fades into flashback, and we see Frank as a tightly wound young man who has his life organized down to the minute. Frank has a beautiful wife, Susan (Emily Mortimer), and daughter, Jesse (Matreya Fedor), and he travels around delivering motivational speeches on time efficiency. When Susan accidentally throws off one of Frank's carefully planned days, he falls victim to a bizarre contagion of mishaps and inadvertently learns a life-altering secret that forever changes how he views himself and his loved ones. He then sets off on a whimsical odyssey, and vows to get rid of his rigid plans and live his life with wild abandon. But when he faces a fork in the road, he must decide between his newfound freedom and his old life with his family.Reynolds gives a charming performance as the angst-ridden Frank, and delivers many laughs with his portrayal of a man slowly losing his grip. While it's fun to watch the story take so many surprisingly twists and turns, the crazy plot occasionally forces the viewer to swallow some pretty big misunderstandings and miscommunications. CHAOS THEORY also weaves back and forth between romantic comedy, black comedy, and serious drama, which results in a rather uneven tone. But those issues aside, the film still features strong performances and sharp dialogue, making for an unusual and entertaining love story.
This film, directed by Marco Siega, shows us how we wind up hanging on to things that are comfortable and build around good things, unless. Frank (Ryan Reynolds) is a time and control freak. He likes playing life safe. Frank has a wonderful family, a wife named Susan (Emily Mortimer) and a very young daughter, Jesse (Matreya Fedor). Frank is a motivational speaker who is a into time efficiency. Susan inadvertently throws of his total schedule by setting the clocks forward which causes a chain of uncanny events leading him to discover that there was no way that he could possibly be the father of his child.
It's pretty tricky to play a film in total flashback, however, we find that Frank was not always a cool as he is in the present. His anger and disappointment causes him to question his existence and sets off on a self destructive journey to undermine his self directed principles. The newly found life of wild, reckless abandon gets old and he finally comes to a realization that nothing can change the past and his dearly loves his family. A real tear jerker comes at the end when he finally comes home to his wife and daughter.
Although the CHAOS THEORY presents itself as a romantic comedy, the black and serious drama that results, makes it for a very intense and serious mix. Sharp and witty dialogue make this a real charmer of a huge love story.
I'm going to give this a 4/5 for a really believable story.

To open, this movie was great! Incredible performance by Ryan Reynolds. It is up to the viewer to decide if he is sane or insane but he played this role so well that you have to question, "What would I do?"
A great original story with a great supporting cast. Not one camera hog or "pretty" boy or girl overacting with perfect hair. This was a cinematic view of what seemed like real life, and by this I mean that the story and actors and pace were believable - I could easily get sucked into this movie.
Obsessed with order and planning, this guy writes priorities down on cards. Then going through one bad day, he realizes he missed out on some of those little things that make life special.
I don't want to give too much away so let me just say that this guy writes a lot on a lot of cards. I've got tons of "to do" lists that never get done so let's just say the cards represent temporary ideas. With that in mind...
I loved a couple small details where he rearranged the order of his cards so that he no longer first killed himself then his wife, (not possible), but first killed his wife, then himself.
Also, after a traumatic confrontation he writes on yet more cards, "fight more", "drink more" and then he turns to the girl next to him and asks her name. Then he writes, "Rachel more".
The main overlying lesson might be about a man who is trying to forgive something unforgivable. But then it might just be a love story, a mid-life crisis story or a comedy about those little quirks that make each human unique.
BOTTOM LINE
Great for a person or couple but not a "party" movie. Funny, dramatic and wholly entertaining. Makes you want to go out and buy a Harley... a red one.Read full review
