It was the middle 90's and I was at Cubby bear,a club across from Wrigley field in Chicago,Illinois to see Al Di Meola's new group. Was he going to do more Land of the Midnight Sun or Elegant Gypsy? No,not exactly. He seemed to be going in a definitely latin frame of reference, but he wasnt in a hurry to make a statment.instead,he was having fun,but always in a musicianly way. While no particular hits take center stage, the whole album is listenable and interesting. One thing about Di Meola though-he never compromises to get airplay. That got him, off the radio, but endeared him to his audiences forever. This is definitely a tropical or Brazilian groove, but never derivative.
