This is a really lovely little sleeper of a movie. Anyone interested in New Zealand should probably see it for its picture of NZ as it was long ago. Those of you who are a little older will likely see many comparisons to the US in the fifties and sixties. The mistreatment of the old lady is hard to watch, and the rotten brother will make you want to pinch his head off, but the rest of the movie is wonderful. Not earth shattering material, but enjoyable.
Synopsis on back of cover sounded good and interesting. However, the language of the brother of Elisabeth was absolutely horrible and totally unnecessary, and the hateful relationship he has with her as well as with his parents, especially his father, is totally disrespectful. Cannot recommend this to anyone at all as a result of the degrading language even though Elisabeth's personal character is very admirable and her friendship with the Maori woman is righteous and to be applauded and good does triumph over evil. Use of a Parent Guardian filtering device is highly recommended....
My wife and I rented this movie and decided we needed the DVD to share with family and friends. Mostly fiction, but based on some historical fact, this charming story is fit for young and old. The story line moves along quickly and the characters will keep you engaged. It takes place in New Zealand but the accents are easily understood. Directed by an American, this movie should become a hit in former British Commonwealth nations as well as the rest of the globe. I would highly recommend it if you want some wholesome entertainment with a moral lesson or two thrown in.
A very moving story of a young girl's love for the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II, and the girl's letter campaign to invite the Queen to visit her small town in New Zealand. Funny, charming, heart-warming sub plot about the girl's friendship with an old Native woman. A wonderful independent film classic that you will watch again and again! A brilliant color presentation. One of my family's favorite films.
