This is 2 motor auto-reverse deck that is relay operated (rather than the cheap piano key type), I had to replace the 4 belts (1 short/thin, and 1 long flat) because they had "melted" into a disgusting black sticky goo. Once cleaned up with isopropyl alcohol, putting on the new belts was quite easy. The belts cost about $20 with shipping. The deck has all the tape type selections and Dolby, etc. Listening through the headphone jack requires some sort of volume control with sensitive headphones. The sound quality is correct for a mid-priced Sony. In other words, very good. The next deck I buy will be a Sony "ES" that is like an upgraded version of a Sony high-end deck. Looking at the the design, engineering, and quality features of this deck gave me great respect for Japanese manufacture from 20 years ago, With a supply of belts and perhaps the pinch wheels, there is no reason why this deck shouldn't be working in another 20 years. I am using it to convert oral histories from tape to mp3. It works great so far. We have some really old tapes and none of them have broken yet. I am very pleased.

I tried to get this cassette player to work many times but it didn’t work. Tape wouldn’t turn.
