I originally "won" this cookbook in a contest over 30 yrs ago, and my copy was so well loved it was a mess- food splatters, book jacket torn (and thrown away years ago), and the spine was ripped and broken in several places! So I decided to get another copy...one that did not "show" it was loved quite so much! So I found this at a great price! Now I'm proud to have it once again on my bookshelf, looking tall and stately, not worn and disheveled! I DID spend some time copying my cooking notes from my old cookbook to this one, before I gave the old copy, somewhat sadly Imight add, to Goodwill--hopefully someone can still appreciate it and might not mind its condition... But this is the VERY best cookbook I have ever seen! Recipes are well organized, and very well laid out and understandable. A great cookbook with a lot of extra info for the new cook, especially, but plenty of challenge for the experienced cook. I was determined NOT to be a cook in my 20s, and this completely changed my mind!! To me, its indexing is intuitive- so easy to find a meat or vegetable or dessert from the get-go! And its recipes are solid and tasty. I have many favorites, from the meatloaf to the chicken paprikash, and they are all reliable standbys you never get tired of!Read full review

I've been using and researching cookbooks since I managed a book department of a major department store in the 1970s and have never found a better, more inclusive "basic" cookbook than The Redbook Cookbook. It is a massive book with respect to information. My own copy is pretty ragged from 40 years of use and I recently purchased two copies on eBay as Christmas gifts for my two children. This book has "authentic" recipes (I recommend the Crab Imperial recipe as an authentic Chesapeake Bay dish). It has tutorials regarding cooking methods, utensils, ingredients, entertaining and even canning. It does NOT cover ethnic, current or popular recipes such as the Southwestern, Thai, or Fusion styles as this book dates to 1971 but, if you need ALL the basic questions answered and a beginning library of good American recipes, this is the first cookbook you should buy. Perfect for newlyweds and those just starting to show an interest in the kitchen.Read full review
My original copy of this cookbook was falling apart so I was thrilled to find it in such good condition. It really does have a recipe for the best meatloaf ever - in addition to many other excellent recipes.
