This book explains it all from the point of a conscripted German who served on the Higher Staff @ Stalingrad. He details the changes within himself as the 6th Army went from victory to stalemate to starvation and defeat and then surrender. He also survived the years of Soviet captivity to return to Germany after the war and explains why the loss of the 6th Army was more than just Hitler's fault... the blame is also shared between the Higher Staff, weak willed Generals and, of course, that obese, lying bastard ReichMarshall Hermann Goring who insisted that his already crippled Luftwaffe could supply surrounded troops with enough food, ammo, fuel and medical supplies to allow them to continue to fight a battle that was already over. Von Manstien's attempted "rescue" is also critiqued thoroughly. While not as rivetting as Voices of Stalingrad this book does add much more to ones education regarding this bitter struggle. It is worth owning.Read full review
