How could a head-over-heels-in-love, preppie boy ever get over the death of his trim, lovely-to-look-at, artsy, tomboy girlfriend and wife. We all stood in line at the theatre in the early 1970s to see this "Love Story" made into a movie. We cried when Jenny died and then wondered what next. And then came this movie, largely unnoticed in 1978. We have Oliver Barrett IV (Ryan O'Neal)and Oliver Barret III (Ray Milland) reprising their roles but a different Phil Cavilleri (Edward Binns), the father-in-law. Oliver IV just can't get over Jenny's death when the movie opens. Two years later, he hasn't dated in spite of Phil's and his x-Harvard roommate's attempts at matchmaking. He is even in therapy. But then during a run in Central Park, he meets Marcie (Candice Bergen). He tells her he is Pancho Gonzalez; she is just Marcie. But behind those names once revealed, Marcie becomes Marcie Bonwit, the legendary department store name. And we know, of course, that Oliver is rich too. It seems an ideal match because they are so much alike--a WASP and a WASP. Both are very good looking, have good jobs, and are athletic. So what's wrong? Different ideologies remain--especially different attitudes toward the poor and downtrodden. And then there is the ghost of Jenny. Who could compete with the ideal dead wife? Marcie eventually points out that she is tired of competing with a dead woman and that Oliver seems to have a chip on his shoulder about her. "Oliver's Story" may seem silly to some, but it raises the valid point that many people face in their lives when they have lost what they feel is their soulmate. By the end of the movie, we are weeping again because Oliver finally adopts a new attitude toward his mother and father. And yet we are wondering where he will go from there. This movie is beautifully photographed and shows some wonderful scenes of New York and Hong Kong. It is worth your time.Read full review
Ryan O'Neal is an amazing actor and makes you feel he really lost his wife in real life. For those who loved watching Love Story, I would highly recommend watching Oliver's Story.
